Surrounding the LocalHub
Around the hub building and the car park in front of it are:
- a bus stop
- a car pool (of electric vehicles, naturally)
- a Bicycle Pool
- nearby Businesses
Bus Stop
As the localnet vans can bring anyone from the LocalHub's catchment area to the hub, these act as feeder services for more traditional bus and/or train stops at the hub. If these are integrated into the mall area of the hub, passengers can wait in comfort indoors - and frequent the shops and food outlets within the hub while waiting for their bus or train.
Electric Car Pool
Immediately surrounding the LocalHub are ample car parking spaces - many of which are occupied by the “pool” vehicles. These are of several different types and sizes but are all powered by the same BatteryBox that the delivery vans use. They can therefore be “recharged” or, more accurately, “have their battery swapped” in a minute or so rather than have to sit idle while charging.
Bicycle Pool
There will also be a bicycle pool from which residents can borrow a bicycle. These may be returned to the pool from which they were taken, to any other LocalHub or latched to their DeliveryPoint. The DeliveryPoint will report the location of the bicycle and may instruct a delivery van to collect it and return it to the LocalHub if appropriate or the hirer may use it again to return to the LocalHub later.
Nearby Businesses
Businesses that collect and/or deliver a smaller portion of their sales will typically spring up around the hub. These will range from a dry cleaners that moves many tens of boxes a day between the hub and their premises to a cobbler's or jeweller's who may send just a few boxes a day.
