Economic
The scope of localnet is such that the complete system is beyond the reach of any single start-up. The basic concepts are difficult to protect and exploit via patent laws.
Pilot Project Funding
However, the costs of designing and operating a system are much, much less than the investment being ploughed into a city-scale development. If just a small percentage of the overall cost of such a project were funnelled into localnet design, a functional system could be developed.
Capital Investment
The total cost of reaching the final, standards-based version of localnet is more than can be borne in a single project. The early implementations will therefore not use much automated equipment and hence will be more labour intensive than the ones that follow. Only by learning how residents change their behaviour when localnet services are available will we start to be able to predict which areas should be targeted for optimisation.
